"Ämne" is translated as Field [of study], subject [of discourse], matter [uranium]. Topic was a correct translation, though I'd have preferred "Subject". Substance would be a correct translation in another context.
I certainly wish you good luck in your endeavor! How about watching Swedish films with English subtitles? I think that might be easier to start with - and perhaps less frustrating. But you will certainly learn a more advanced Swedish from reading books in Swedish.

Thanks for the translation Jacob, that one word really was a challenge with our dictionary.
Thanks all for the luck. We know that this is a big task ahead of us, but the challenge is fun. We have been watching films and tv with and without subtitles too...also very helpful.

You're welcome, Julia. It was my pleasure. How about trying a "lättläst" book? Swedish library's usually have a section of books that have been reworked; easier language, shorter sentences. The books are graded according to difficulty level.
